Preface
From an area that was once a slough filled with cattails, to
an area used as a dump, to a one field ball diamond, to an outstanding
area containing three nice ball diamonds, is a brief history of the land
on which the Council Bluffs Church Softball Association, Inc. now plays
all its games.
The Council Bluffs Church Softball league was informally
organized in 1930. Only four teams were in that first league, and games
were of the twilight variety, played on any vacant lot on which a diamond
could be made.
This history of the church league begins with the formal
organization in 1933 when it was sponsored by the Council Bluffs
Ministerial Association. The information was compiled by JoAnn Tews from
articles found in the Council Bluffs Nonpareil which is on microfilm at
the Council Bluffs Public Library.
A sincere thank you goes to the reference librarians who were
supportive and helpful in the research being done. Thanks also to some of
the “old timers”, Bill Ballenger, Charlie O’Hara, and Homer Beezley for
their bits and pieces of information they added to the history of the
league.
